Monitoring wells provide property owners, environmental professionals, engineers, and regulatory agencies with valuable information about groundwater conditions. However, the information collected from a monitoring well is only useful when the well remains structurally sound, accessible, and properly protected.
Damage to the casing, cap, surface seal, or surrounding pad can allow sediment, runoff, debris, or contaminants to enter the well. Other problems can make groundwater measurements inaccurate or prevent technicians from collecting samples altogether.

1. The Protective Casing Is Bent, Cracked, or Corroded

- One side of the pad sinking
- Water pooling around the well
- Drainage flowing toward the casing
EPA guidance recommends that a monitoring well’s finished surface pad slope away from the casing so water drains off the pad instead of collecting around the well.

4. Sediment Is Accumulating Inside the Well

- An obstructed well
- Damaged monitoring equipment
- Nearby pumping activity
- Seasonal groundwater changes
- Changes in surrounding drainage
USGS groundwater monitoring documentation notes that variable water levels can sometimes result from well degradation, including casing shifts or collapse. Nearby wells and other site conditions can also influence readings, so unusual data does not automatically prove structural failure.

6. Sampling Equipment Cannot Enter or Exit the Well Properly
A monitoring well may require repair when pumps, water-level meters, bailers, or other sampling tools no longer move freely through the casing.
Resistance or obstruction can indicate:
- A bent casing
- A separated casing joint
- Internal corrosion
- A collapsed section
- Debris inside the well
- Roots entering damaged components
- Sediment buildup near the bottom
Do not force equipment past an obstruction. This could damage the instrument, worsen the condition of the well, or leave equipment stuck underground.

7. Water Samples Change Without an Obvious Explanation

- Determine whether the well should be repaired, redeveloped, replaced, or abandoned.
The Idaho Department of Environmental Quality advises property owners to maintain accurate well records and hire a licensed well driller for well construction, modification, abandonment, and closure.
If a monitoring well is no longer needed or cannot be restored, it should not simply be cut off or covered. Idaho requires wells being permanently removed from service to be properly decommissioned in accordance with state well construction standards.
